Welcome to Year 6!

In Year 6, we set high expectations of the children so that they are both able to achieve their potential and develop a fantastic attitude to learning. We put a huge emphasis on preparing the children for their transition to Key Stage 3, including developing their resilience, confidence and the expectations they place upon themselves to be the best possible version of themselves. Being in Year 6 truly is the most memorable time in your child’s primary education. Year 6 is a key moment in your child’s life; they will develop more independence, a huge amount of resilience and, most importantly, they should become very aware of who they are as both learners and as young adults.
As in all other year groups, we teach a broad and balanced curriculum, rich in creativity. All lessons are both challenging and engaging. We want our children to have the knowledge they need to succeed at high school and beyond but in addition to this, to have a real love of learning, to be intrinsically motivated, to achieve and believe that anything is possible! Progress is monitored constantly through the effective use of Assessment for Learning techniques. Our daily WOW time provides children with the opportunity to “Show what they know!”, putting their retrieval skills into practice!
During this year we will promote your child’s love of learning, independence, and curiosity. We do this through our teaching but also through our Multi-Academy Trust’s moto of ‘Be the best you can be’ Our school values of Respect, Ambition and Pride, are also incorporated into every lesson.
Year Six will have a focus on preparation for SATs at the end of Key Stage 2. However, we ensure all lessons are always creative, engaging and challenging to prepare children for this. Progress is regularly monitored closely by all teaching staff within the class. After discussions with you as the parents, intervention is put in place to support your child as needed. We are inclusive and are always here to support your child grow and enjoy their learning as well as ensuring they are achieving the most at home too. We realise that our children have a range of interests and abilities across a range of subjects and enjoy developing that knowledge/refining those skills, further.
Of course, a big part of your child’s summer term in Year 6 will be preparing for the move to secondary school – a huge milestone in their lives. This may involve going to their new schools, a visit from some of their new teachers, or shared classroom activities. Hopefully these should help with any concerns or questions they have. Another exciting opportunity arising in the summer term is our residential trip to Winmarleigh Hall! Your child will take part in orienteering challenges, brave the trapeze and build a rafts to race across the lake amongst other adventurous activities!
Children are provided with Enrichment Experiences throughout the year which allows opportunities for children to explore the wider world around them. These experiences aim to show progressive skills from Nursery to Year 6. We utilise our Beach School status to ensure that the children have ample opportunities to visit the beach throughout the year, across all seasons.
We ensure that verbal and written feedback is provided and is meaningful to the child. We use “live marking” to ensure that children are aware of the feedback and that it is purposeful to them. Children are given “Fix It” time to amend any mistakes and respond to feedback. Children are also provided with regular “Gold Star” challenges to give them the opportunity to apply their learning in a variety of different contexts. The teachers in Upper Key Stage 2 work closely together to plan for progression. We guarantee a progression of skills taught from Year 5 to 6 and monitor this closely to inform future planning.
We have a reading rich curriculum. The children take part in daily reading lessons where pupils are immersed into the world of literature as well as reading class novels that link to the wider curriculum. The children have access to our extensive classroom library at all times and also visit the school library weekly. As teachers, we enjoy sharing enthralling texts that capture the imaginations of all children and adults alike!
How can I support my child’s learning at home?
For English, the single most important thing that you can do is to hear your child read. Good readers make good writers because they are exposed to a greater variety of vocabulary, syntax, grammar and style. Be a good role model for reading. This is the perfect excuse to curl up on the sofa, forget the chores, and read a good book yourself! Of course, children in Year 6 are perfectly capable of reading to themselves as well, and independent reading (and writing) must also be encouraged. However, it is important that those comprehension skills are regularly checked and reading aloud is perfect for that.
Homework is set in the first week of each half term and is expected to be returned by the last week of half term. There are four different tasks set which embeds their learning from in school. To encourage and engage the children in cross curricular challenge, subject specific half termly homework is also set; the children can choose the challenges that they wish to complete. These tasks extend the learning taking place in the classroom. All students have access to an online learning platform - Edmodo - in which they are expected to complete a weekly reading comprehension and a weekly maths piece of work; this is part of our transition focus and ensures the children are prepared for the amount of homework expected when they enter Key Stage 3.
