Why do we teach Personal Social and Health Education and Relationships and Health Education?
PSHE stands for Personal, Social and Health Education. Under the umbrella of PHSE we also teach Relationship and Health Education (RHE) and British Values.
These subjects are compulsory subjects and enable us to support children morally, socially, culturally and physically. At Westcliff we do PHSE because it supports our children in becoming successful and happy adults who will make a meaningful contribution to society.
How do we deliver PHSE and RHE?
We have carefully selected a scheme of work (called 1Decision) because not only does it support our children in navigating some tricky issues, but it also promotes mindfulness and it encourages children to focus on the present moment and accept their feelings and thoughts.
We think, as parents, you will agree that by integrating mindfulness into the school curriculum we can arm our children with lifelong skills that support their current and future mental health and wellbeing.
At Westcliff, our PSHE (including RHE) curriculum involves the children discussing and finding out about:
-
Feelings and emotions
-
Being responsible
-
Computer safety
-
Our world
-
Hazards
-
Fire safety
-
First aid
-
Keeping and staying safe
-
Keeping and staying healthy
-
Relationships
These topics are not only covered in PSHE and RHE. There are overlaps with many other subjects including science, computing, PE, British Values and RE and we feel that this emphasises how vital we feel it is to promote learning around these areas in order to safeguard and promote the welfare of our children.
PSHE takes place in class weekly in many forms such as our PSHE lessons, circle time, British Values assemblies and Project Evolve sessions which focuses on digital safety – an essential topic to support children in our ever-growing world of technology.
What is the impact of PSHE?
By the time children leave Westcliff, we want them to feel confident, valued, unique and respected.
Through our teaching, the children experience challenging situations in a safe environment and we aim for pupils to be equipped with the skills needed to manage different influences and pressures, as part of their personal development.
